How to put write permissions on folders and files ?
Some modules need write permissions on specific files or folders, for example to save images or generate files. Identify the path given in the error message or module documentation.
The appropriate permissions depend on your hosting, file ownership and the user running PHP. Ask your host which permissions to use before changing them.
- Connect to your hosting file manager or file transfer service using the access details provided by your host. You can download FileZilla from its official website: FileZilla.
- Open the shop folder, then the specific affected path. Module files are generally under
modules/module_technical_name/. - In FileZilla, right-click the file or folder and select File permissions. Record the current permissions before changing them.
- Apply the permissions specified by your host. Files and folders may need different values. Use recursion only when required for the identified path and following the host’s instructions.
- Repeat the action that failed. If it still fails, send the path and error message to your host so they can also check ownership and the PHP user.
Do not systematically apply 777 to every file and subfolder. This value grants read, write and execute permissions to the owner, group and other users. On a directory, execute permission allows traversal. A recursive change propagates permissions to the items it contains, so it can affect much more than the selected directory. If the host requires it temporarily for diagnosis, restore appropriate permissions afterwards.
